US Armed Forces Reserve Center, Fort Sheridan, Lake County, IL
This US Armed Forces Reserve Center project is located at the existing Corps of Engineers Fort Sheridan facility in Lake County, IL. The project consisted of construction of a two-story, slab-on-grade Armed Forces Reserve Center training building, single-story Organizational Maintenance Shop (OMS) and single-story unheated storage (UHS) with associated parking and drive areas and detention basin. Part of the project was demolition of the existing building on site. The AFRC Training building was constructed in an area where old buildings where formerly located and demolished. The associated parking lot and drive areas were designed for Humvee and 2-axle, 5-ton truck vehicular traffic. All design recommendations conformed to U.S. Army specifications.
· Provided geotechnical engineering services including pavement design calculations for the project
· Conducted a subsurface exploration consisting of a series of soil borings and test pits to evaluate the soil conditions and delineate the extent of the existing fill resulting from demolition of old buildings on site
· Evaluated shallow-foundation systems consisting of spread/continuous footings to support the building
· Observation of the subgrades for foundation, floor slab and pavement including proofrolling during construction
